Quality Control Lab Manager
The Laboratory Manager is a supervisory level position within the Quality Control Department. The Laboratory Manager
plans and directs activities concerned with development, application and maintenance of quality standards in rock and
asphaltic concrete products. The position involves, but is not limited to, the following tasks and duties:
  • Follow/ implement specification specific test procedures to ensure conformity to AASHTO accreditation certification
  • Ability to decipher and implement agency provisions/ specifications for process and production testing and conformity.
  • Collect/ prepare samples of the following construction materials; soil, aggregate, and hot mix asphalt (HMA) in either a laboratory or field setting
  • Develops/ uses current standards of documentation for QC using computer generated standardized forms for ease of input and consistency of product.
  • Develops new or modifies current methods for inspection, testing, and evaluation of rock and HMA products
  • Develops/  uses current procedure’s/ method’s for inspection, testing, and evaluation of rock and HMA products.
  • Reviews mineral aggregate and HMA tests on a daily basis, and notifies the Quality Control Manager and Plant Manager of any nonconformity

  • Provide customer service to help promote customer satisfaction. This could include internal and external technical training on materials and construction production
  • Devises sampling procedures and designs and develops forms and instructions for recording, evaluating, and reporting quality and reliability data
  • Establishes program to evaluate analytical testing, equipment, facilities, precision measurements, accuracy measurements, and performance testing
  • Directs workers engaged in measuring, testing, and tabulating data concerning quality and reliability; develops and implements methods and procedures for monitoring above mentioned work activities of subordinates
  • Compiles & writes training material; conducts training sessions on quality control activities
  • Researches QC Management software program for test data input, test results management and reporting; researches
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
The hours of work for this position are usually from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This is a safety-sensitive position.

Requirements General Work Location/Travel

This position is located in the office at 885 Lake Herman Road in Vallejo. The Laboratory Manager may travel to projects
where our products are utilized to assess the quality of the material delivered.

  • An understanding of aggregate mining and processing and hot mix asphalt production and the equipment used in these processes
  • Supervisory or management experience desired
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English
  • Ability to give and receive information on the phone
  • Strong mathematical skills
  • Working knowledge of computerized quality control programs and Microsoft products
  • 2-3 year’s Supervisory experience
  • 2+ years industry experience preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or equivalent
  • Caltrans or AASHTO certification desired
  • Employee is required to observe all safety standards and rules of the office and/or plant operation procedures
  • Employee must report all injuries as soon as possible after occurrence to his/her supervisor and Risk Management
  • Any required safety gear must be worn by all employees as necessary when visiting other facilities
  • Due to the physical requirements of this position it will be necessary to pass a job-related physical
  • Must possess a current California driver license and clean DMV (2 points or less)
  • This position is considered a safety sensitive position and will be required to participate in the random drug/alcohol testing pool
  • Due to the physical requirements of this position it will be necessary to pass a job-related physical
