Environmental, Health & Safety Coordinator
Gillibrand Industrial Sands, LLC. is seeking a recent college graduate to provide daily support for the environmental, health, and safety programs at its specialty sand surface mine site in Simi Valley, CA. The Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Coordinator reports directly to the corporate Director of EHS, but also works closely with the Plant Manager, Supervisors, and employees. Responsibilities will primarily include assisting the Director of EHS with the implementation and recordkeeping of the site EHS program and special projects. Other production related projects of importance to the plant may also be assigned.
The EHS Administrator will gain an understanding of the EHS requirements across a number of regulatory agencies and will drive actions to address EHS issues and concerns from plant personnel. They will maintain a consistent presence out in the plant providing heightened vigilance and awareness commiserate with plant activities.
This position works with a minimal amount of supervision and will dedicate approximately 30 percent of the time out in the plant environment.
The schedule will be 6:00 or 7:00 am to 3:30 or 4:30 pm. Occasional project needs may include arriving before or staying beyond normal scheduled hours, including weekends.
Essential Job Functions:
- Implementation, administration, and enforcement of plant-wide safety, health, and environmental programs.
- Assist with projects to create/update site lockout/tagout/tryout procedures and PPE assessments.
- Maintain documents including training records, pressure vessel permits, Safety Data Sheets, and Lists of Hazardous Materials. Archive records and electronic files as appropriate.
- Perform routine inspections of plant safety equipment including confined space gas monitors, fall protection equipment, and first aid and emergency related supplies to ensure readiness.
- Conduct periodic site inspections for safety and environmental compliance including storm water and chemical storage locations.
- Assist with creating and delivering training materials, including weekly tailgates, task training, and annual MSHA refresher training for employees.
- Perform industrial hygiene surveys for noise exposure and airborne contaminants including total dust, respirable crystalline silica, and welding fumes.
- Promote personal development and awareness of EHS requirements and concerns in all plant personnel.
- Be out in the plant monitoring and addressing safety activities/concerns.
- Develop a strong and reputable relationship with both hourly and management employees.
- Assist in the development and implementation of EHS work procedures.
- Participate in the plant Safety Committee. Prepare agendas, lead meetings, maintain minutes, and track action item completion.

Requirements |
Experience, Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Environmental Health, or related field (preferred). Degree in a technical, scientific, or engineering discipline and/or equivalent.
- At least 2 to 3 years of experience in a similar Environmental and or Safety-related role.
- Organization – Needs to address projects in a logical manner and be methodical in approaching issues that are complex; Possess the ability to handle several different projects or requests with a plan and structure while maintaining them as individual mandates.
- Communication – Needs to demonstrate good verbal skills and be able to speak to all levels of the plant organization; Ability to write clear and concise reports and documents with logical and understandable language that speaks to the message that the writer is trying to deliver.
- Cooperation – Have the ability to work well with all levels of employees in the organization and be flexible when decisions are made contrary to personal views.
- Problem Analysis & Creativity – Need to be able to identify EHS problems, secure relevant information, identify possible causes, and suggest possible solutions; will need to have the ability to develop new and unique approaches to existing or traditional situations.
- EHS Regulations and Policies – Become knowledgeable of company policies and government regulations pertaining to EHS programs and implementation of requirements in the field.
- Training Programs – Familiarity with the types of materials and instruction that are available to support EHS education within the plant.
- Industry Requirements – Knowledge of the plant processes, equipment, positions, and generally accepted industrial practices.
Work Demands and Environment:
- Personal protective equipment is required on a regular basis, as needed, including hard hat, hearing protection, eye protection, safety-toed boots, respirator, protective clothing including reflective vest, gloves, and other personal protective equipment, as needed.
- Employee may occasionally be required to work in environments which include exposure to extreme temperatures, and will be required to sit, stand, and demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders.
